It seems that if you return to hub from the temple level before the boss spawns, a 1" black back blacks the bottom of your screen when you return to the academy, and you cannot move or cast. You can still exit the game, however. I tried reproducing it on all levels, but only the temple level produces this result, and it happens every time.
