While the game is paused, the rain on the forest level continues to build up endlessly, gradually bogging down the system more and more. If, like me, you like to run it in a window and alt-tab back to it occasionally in between doing other things, it eventually becomes a huge drain on resources if you leave it paused for more than around ten minutes.
