Impossible to defrost the imps and the fire you use on your robe stops and you have to press jump or down to get fire on the ground. (Sorry if you don't understand what I'm trying to say, it's hard to explain the problem.) Basically, you can't get the fire to work properly (it only works at the start of the map but when you go farther down it stops working) and I think that because of it you can't complete the quest.

I've been having the same issue with the imp, and it's not just the fire robes that won't free him. I've tried explosions, fire projectiles, and fire explosions. I think what you're trying to describe is fire robes+breakable ice platforms. They interact kind of weirdly at the moment, eventually stopping you from falling through if you go down enough breakable ice.

Oops, I think I should keep my mouth shut and let people ask their own questions. I played with the fire robes some more, and it turns out they don't need breakable ice to behave weirdly. I'm sure it's not the platforms at all, because I used the strongest teleport spell I could get to not touch them at all and just teleported my way down, even without moving at all to make sure the fire doesn't "run" out and it still didn't work. So this might be a issue with either the fire rober or the fire robe AND the imps.

The imps not defrosting is an oversight on my part. Sorry about that! Currently, the only fire effect that defrosts the imps is the minisun robe aura.
I've only managed to reproduce the fire trail bug once so far, which wasn't enough to figure out what's going on. I need to rip it out and redo it anyway, because it has a separate issue with its damage calculation, so it'll probably get fixed while I'm doing that.
