Similar to the laser, there needs to me more materials that affect the WAY a spell works rather than what it does, a few examples would be an area of effect spell surrounding the player, similar to the way the shields work, or a spray, which leaves a liquid like residue. I almost never use anything other than laser because of it's versatility, and more abilities like this would be very appreciated as opposed to the basic "fireball"

Right now we have two new paradigm materials in the works: traps and turrets. Traps move and behave similarly to projectiles, but once they hit a wall they arm themselves and do increased damage against anything that collides with them. Turrets repeatedly fire their spell over several seconds, these can be lasers, projectiles, or traps depending on what other materials are in the spell.
I don't know if we're going to put out any more materials other than the 35 public and 5 in-dev that we already have, but if we do expand the material list we'll take your suggestions under consideration.

Is there a way to change the properties of our minions to empower them, my only way of using Minions is either in a Robe or (Dusk, Wrench, Book, Silk)

If by properties you mean on-hit effects or different behavior patterns, I'm afraid there's no way in game to do that. The minions do change in appearance depending on how high their health/damage values are tho. Try enchanting your spell, or boosting orange effects in other ways to increase their power!
